The Man

George Mortimer Pullman was born March 3, 1831 in Brockton, New York. In 1867 he married Harriet Sanger, daughter of a Chicago railroad contractor. They had four children: Florence, Harriet, and twins George Jr. and Walter.

The Pullman Company

Although there were other established sleeping car companies, Pullman was constantly thinking of ways to improve service and facilities. The "Pioneer" was the first, truly grand car that Pullman created. It was built in 1865 in the Chicago and Alton Rail Road Shed on the site of what is now Union Station in the Loop.

Labor Unrest

Pullman publicized his company town as a model community filled with contented, well-paid workers. The Pullman workers, however disagreed, especially after the onset of the economic panic that begain in 1893.
