The first Pullman train car that became a model for the "Pullman Idea" of luxury. Completed in 1864 the car featured "plush red carpet, gilt edged mirrors, brocaded fabric seats, door frames and windows made of hardworked and polished woods, silver trimmed coal-oil lamps. The Pioneer cost $20,000 - five times the price of the "ordinary car" Stanley Buder writes in his book PULLMAN. The pioneer was refurbished over the years and brought out for display in various settings, including the 1893 Worlds Fair. It was demolished by the Pullman Standard Company in the mid 20th century. This photo taken in 1891 and shows exerior wear. It is rumored that this car may have been part of Lincolns Funeral Car train on the Chicago to Springfield leg.
