Beman - First Methodist Evangelical Church, 1887
Color photograph showing 1887 church, now known as United Methodist Church of Batavia, at 8 N. Batavia Avenue, Batavia. This early church shows Beman's affinity with east coast architects such as Richard Upjohn (whose studio he trained in) and H. H. Richardson. It's rusticated stone, bold arches, tower, round bays, and stacked roofline create a picturesque building in a style very different from Elim Luthern Church built only one year later. "Solon S. Beman: Architecture in Illinois" exhibit.
