The 20th Century Limited, 1948On September 15, 1948, actress Beatrice Lillie and General Dwight D. Eisenhower (then president of Columbia University) were the guests of honor at christening ceremonies for an all-new train, which was held at New York’s Grand Central Terminal. The Hickory Creek was built in 1948 by the Pullman Standard Car Manufacturing Company for the re-equipping of the 20th Century Limited (started in 1902). The car was part of the largest order by the New York Central in an effort to provide it's riders with the latest up-to-date technology. Some of these advancements included florescent lighting throughout, ice cold water and separate climate controls in every bedroom, electrically controlled braking, and magic doors that operated pneumatically. With a pull or push of the door handle, the door would swing effortlessly granting entry to the car. If required, the door could be held open, allowing the easy boarding of guests and accompanying baggage. The Hickory Creek was configured as a five double bedroom, buffet, lookout lounge car. The unique design, credited to Henry Dreyfuss (famed industrial designer of the time), included a raised lookout lounge that was 12 inches above the rest of the room, with oversized windows and furniture configured in such a way that ensured a view of the scenery from any position. These Creek cars were truly unusual in appearance. A characteristic that set them apart from their 1938 Dreyfuss-designed predecessors, and most other lightweight observation cars, was the deep windows in the gracefully rounded tail-end that gave the cars the name “Lookout Lounges.” Two days after the christening the new 20th Century Limited entered revenue service. The Hickory Creek operated in service on the 20th Century Limited from 1948 to 1967, at which time it was retired. Subject: ; Pullman_Train_Cars; Rail_Travel_-_Other; Format: Photograph (all forms) |

The Empire BuilderCar 1122 from the Great Northern's Empire Builder passenger train. When World War II ended, the Great Northern gave the "Empire Builder" a massive upgrade. Five entirely new streamlined, diesel-powered trains were ordered, making their debut on February 7th, 1947. Pullman-Standard built the sixty cars, and Electro-Motive furnished ten passenger diesel locomotives. The passenger cars were all numbered in the 1100 series. The entire ensemble was painted in the "Empire Builder scheme of a beautiful "Omaha Orange" and dark "Pullman Green" with gold strips and lettering, and a silver band along the bottom, which became the standard for GN passenger trains for 20 years. The Lehigh ValleySteel car construction ca 1915. An advertisement appearing in a Lehigh Valley timetable for 1900 under the modest heading "Handsomest Train In The World" included these points: The day coaches are Pullman built, after the latest models. Each car contains ladies' and gentlemen's lavatories and large and comfortable smoking rooms. The last car of the train is a magnificent Pullman Palace Car, with seating capacity for twenty-eight persons. This is an observation car, having plate glass windows at the rear end, and wicker chairs which are so arranged as to be placed at the pleasure of the passenger. The train is lighted throughout (including vestibules) by Pintsch gas, heated by steam, and protected by the Westinghouse automatic brake system, and with Pullman extension vestibules (which project the full width of the car) fitted with nontelescoping device. Each car on the train is finished in polished Mexican mahogany, with figured mahogany panels and inlaid beveled French plate mirrors. The ceilings are of the new style Empire dome pattern, finished in white and gold." Subject: Pullman_Train_Cars; Format: Photograph (all forms) |

The New York CentralCar 4700 - New York Central ACMU (air conditioned multiple unit) The New York Central first took delivery of these cars between February and May 1962 to replace some of the older MU cars that had seen 55 years of service. The first lot ordered in May 1961 and built by Pullman-Standard, were numbered 4600-4625. The New York Central owned these cars. Cars numbered 4700-4725 were leased from the Port Authority of New York/New Jersey. The ACMU's are 85 feet long, seat 130 people and cost approximately $150,000 when new. They were delivered to the New York Central in olive green paint with gold striping. They were very similar to the 4500 series cars delivered in 1950 and 1951. One of the more distinguishing spotting features was their sealed twin beam headlight as opposed to the large single beam headlight of the 4500's. Another feature was smaller passenger windows. Windows were also tinted to eliminate the need for shades. Pullman Standard claimed the 4600's and the 4700's could reach a top speed of 100 mph. The newer cars were designed so they would operate with the 4500's. The cars owned by the Port Authority were sometimes called the Rockefeller cars in reference to the state monies used to purchase the cars. The New York State governor at the time, Nelson Rockefeller, was influential in getting legislation passed to purchase the cars. Subject: Pullman_Train_Cars; Format: Photograph (all forms) |

TrainThe Union Pacific Railroad's M-10001 was a diesel-electric streamliner train built in late 1934 by Pullman-Standard with an engine from General Motors' Electro-Motive Division and General Electric generator and traction motors. It was the UP's second streamliner after the pioneering M-10000, the first equipped with a diesel engine and was a much larger train than its three-car predecessor. All cars were articulatedtrucks were shared between each car. It was delivered on October 2, 1934 and was used for display, test and record-setting runs for the next two months before being returned to Pullman-Standard for an increase in its power and capacity, following which it was placed into service as the City of Portland train. On October 22, 1934, the M-10001, still in its original 900 hp (670 kW) incarnation, set an as-yet unbroken record from coast to coast of the United States, running from Oakland Pier to Grand Central Terminal in 57 hours. When placed into service as the City of Portland, the train reduced the Chicago, Illinois to Portland, Oregon schedule from 58 hours to 40 hours without any upgrades to track or other facilities. Train Union PacificThe Union Pacific Railroad's M-10003, M-10004, M-10005, and M-10006 (pictured) were four identical diesel-electric streamliner train 2-car power sets delivered in May, June, and July 1936 from Pullman-Standard with engines and internal locomotive equipment by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division. One was for the City of San Francisco, two were for the City of Denver, and one was a spare set that ran on both routes. The City of Denver (M10006 and M10005)was a passenger train route operated jointly by the Chicago and North Western (CNW) and Union Pacific (UP) railroads. The train operated on both railroads' rights of way between Chicago, Illinois, and Denver, Colorado. In 1955 the Milwaukee Road assumed the service, replacing the Chicago and Northwestern between Chicago and Omaha. This train service was the fastest long-distance passenger train in the world when it debuted in 1936, traversing the 1,048 miles in as little as 16 hours (an average of about 65 miles per hour). After approximately a year of running that service, during which the train and its sister M-10005 had moved 129,000 passengers and traveled 765,000 miles (1,231,000 km) between the two, the train was renumbered CD-06 in June 1937, and added the rebuilt first power car of LA-4 (ex M-10004) as its third power car in June 1939. It was withdrawn alongside the other units during March 1953 and scrapped. NOTE: The name City of Denver has also been applied to a cafe/lounge car.
