Air Raid Instructions

Civil Defense card giving Air-Raid drill instructions. In the 1950s, these were commonly called "duck and cover" instructions to be followed in the event of a nuclear explosion. These kinds of instructions were often distributed to students in grammar and high school.

First Reformed Church of Roseland

First Reformed Church of Roseland

The First Reform Church, coner 107th and Michigan Avenue, had the distinction of being the first church organzation in this part of Chicago. It was organized in 1849, when Roseland was only a farming community. The present churh building was erected in 1887, while Rev. Henry Van Eff was pastor. The church has a seating capacity of 1400; being the largest church in this part of the city. Its membership is about 750, and they have a Sunday school of about 1300 enrollment. A splendid pipe organ costin $3250 is one of the attractions of the church. The present Pastor is Rev. Henry Hosper.

Koopman's Photograph Gallery

Photo of HR Koopman II (seated) and chums in front of his studio at 111th and Michigan in 1889. Family friend John Ton secured young Henry this property in 1884 and probably helped him convert it from an art supply/framing business to a Photograph Gallery. Note on awning it is spelled "gallery" Corner "cut offs" in photo indicates that Koopman was likely using his first camera to shoot this, gear that he may have purchased from Simpson Studios in New Jersey. John Ton met his and his gear with a wagon when he got off the train at Kensington.

Parise Family

Images of Valentino Parise and family. Parise immigrated to Chicago from Venice, Italy. He purchased land at 400 E. Kensington (Kinsinton and South Park) where he operated an office for the Cunard steamship lines and later opened the Kensington Buffet Company (a saloon), a restaurant and neighborhood bar. Also included is a paper written by Tony Parise on the history of his family and their businesses in Kensington for an American History class, 3/19/81.

Providence Lifestyle

This issue explains the 100th anniversary of eldercare services in the Chicagoland area. Members of the First Reformed Church of Roseland sought to provide care to elderly members of their congregation, thus creating a home for seniors that came to be known as the "Holland Home".
