Allen Paper Car Wheel Building

Ca 1890 George Pullman's only business partner at the factory site relocated from Ohio to anchor a proposed industrial park. Allen "Paper Wheels" were part of the smooth ride important to the stature of the Palace Cars. G. Arcade Library Interior

Note the HH Hawley Stencls near the ceiling. The library contained more than 6,000 volumes, most being George Pullman's personal donation. Library cards cost $3.00 a year for adults and $1.00 a year for children. The library was housed in four elegant rooms in the NE corner of the second floor. These rooms had stained glass windows, chandeliers, Wilton carpets and upholstered furniture which gave the rooms the feel of a gentlemen's club. There was also an austere fifth reading room that was furnished plainly and had a separate entrance. This was for factory workers who might not feel comfortable in the other rooms. Evening classes for adults were held here and included classes in stenography, art, language, and literature. Bertha Ludlam, cousin of George M. was the librarian.

Beman - Alice N. Tomlinson Residence, 1904

Color photograph of Tomlinson residence at 5317 S. University, Chicago. The stone and marble facade of this home features stone brackets along the unusual gambrel roofline, with double bays on the first and second floors surrounded with a stone balcony. The tile roofs of the second floor bays hint that the original main roof was probably also tiles. The delicate carved tops of the porch marble columns is overwhelmed by the massive scale of the rest of the building. "Solon S. Beman: Architecture in Illinois" exhibit.

Beman - Crab Tree Dairy Farm, 1911

Color photograph by Paul Petraitis. This ten building complex at 1 Sheridan Road, Lake Bluff, Illinois, was originally built for Mrs. Scott Durand. The dairy's main building features a clock tower, with wings on either side, fronting a reflecting pool. The dairy architecture evokes Germany or Scandinavia. This was Beman's last grouping of buildings. Today restored and housing a world-class collection of American and British Arts and Crafts artifacts. "Solon S. Beman:Architecture in Illinois" exhibit.

Beman - David O. Strong Residence, 1888

Color photograph of Strong residence located at 1019 E. 48th Street, Chicago. This gray stucco house shows many attributes of Queen Anne design, including the asymmetrical entrance porch, 2-story bay, deep eaves with brackets and the deep row of windows in the 3rd floor roofline peak. It may have originally been a brick house with the addition of stucco now covering other period details. "Solon S. Beman: Architecture in Illinois" exhibit.

Beman - Dr. John C. Cook Residence, 1884

Color photograph of Cook residence at 5708 S. Harper, Chicago. This now shingled home, showing many Queen Anne style details with its arched porch opening, complex roofline, and eyebrow window, also features the multi-paned window detail found in many Pullman houses. "Solon S. Beman: Architecture in Illinois" exhibit.

Subject: ; Architecture; Beman,_Solon_Spencer; Format: Photograph (all forms)

Beman - Edward H. Turner Residence, 1888

Color photograph of Turner residence at 4935 S. Greenwood, Chicago. This simple brick and stone house evokes the Queen Anne style with its large front 2-story turreted tower, round porch, colonnaded classical entrance, and bracketed eaves. "Solon S. Beman: Architecture in Illinois" exhibit.

Beman - Elim Luthern Church, 1888

Color photograph of Elim Luthern Church, now known as Reformation Luthern Church, located at 11310 S. Forest Avenue, Chicago. In 1935, the original wood exterior was covered in brick and stone and the lower section was expanded for new Sunday School rooms, changing its appearance to what we see today. "Solon S. Beman - F. M. Reynolds Residence, 1884

Color photograph showing the Queen Anne clapboard house at 5759 S. Harper, Chicago. The house retains many of its original details, including original windows, brackets, porch details such as cut-outs and spindles, and side-lights around its unusual front door, providing a charming house in what was originally a rural setting. The house is now painted white with red and grey trim. "Solon S. Beman: Architecture in Illinois" exhibit.

Beman - Fifth Church of Christ Scientist, 1904

Color photograph by Linda Beierle Bullen, of Fifth Church of Christ Scientist at 4840 S. Dorchester, Chicago. Now known as Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, this building conveys majesty and scale. Though it has no pedimented focal point, the pedimented and pilastered double entrances, with a colonnated front porch, provide symmetry to an impressive facade. The original cast iron lighting fixtures remain. Fenced off and looking abandoned, the future of this Beman building seems uncertain. "Solon S. Beman: Architecture in Illinois" exhibit.

Beman - First Church of Christ Scientist, 1897

Color photograph by Linda Beierle Bullen, showing First Church of Christ Scientist, 1897 at 4017 S. Drexel Boulevard, Chicago. Now known as Grant Memorial AME Church, Beman modeled this first of many Christian Scientist Churches on the Erechtheion on the Acropolis in Athens and his Classical Greek style set a pattern for later churches. Beman - First Methodist Evangelical Church, 1887

Color photograph showing 1887 church, now known as United Methodist Church of Batavia, at 8 N. Batavia Avenue, Batavia. This early church shows Beman's affinity with east coast architects such as Richard Upjohn (whose studio he trained in) and H. H. Richardson. It's rusticated stone, bold arches, tower, round bays, and stacked roofline create a picturesque building in a style very different from Elim Luthern Church built only one year later. "Solon S. Jackman was a manager at the Pullman Company and he hired Beman to design a number of houses on the block. This tall, 2-story house has deep, peaked dormers, an open 2-story sleeping porch and a 2-story bay in the front but is not covered in cedar shingle. The original porch roof has been changed as well. Beman - John Griffith Residence, 1892

Color photograph of Griffith residence at 3806 S. Michigan Avenue, Chicago. This imposing Chateau-style mansion has many features in common with the Kimball residence on Prairie Avenue, built about the same time. The stone house features a complex roofline with a stone bracketed tower, spires, gothic details, and round and faceted bays. Although far less opulent than the Kimball house, the chateau-style popularized by Solon Beman is clearly evident. "Solon S. Beman: Architecture in Illinois" exhibit.

Beman - John S. Runnells Residence, 1896

Color Photograph of the Runnells house at 1525 N. State Parkway in Chicago. This refined roman brick and stone house is the epitome of elegance. Far from the fussy Queen Anne and elaborate French Chateau styles Beman had been creating for clients, here he mixes classical features with a premonition of prairie school details. In 1911 John Runnells was elected President of the Pullman Company when Robert Todd Lincoln resigned. He had been with the company since 1888, served as President of the Roseland State Bank in 1909, and remained President of the Pullman Company until 1922. "Solon S. Beman - Second Church of Christ Scientist, 1899

Color photograph of Beman's Second Church of Christ Scientist, 1899, located at 2700 N. Pine Grove Avenue, Chicago. Upon seeing Beman's Merchant Tailor Building at the Columbian Exposition, Mary Baker Eddy commissioned Beman to build Christian Science churches. This is a fine example retaining a high degree of integrity and fine details. The colonnaded entrance with ionic capitals and pedimented roofline are typical elements of this classical style. Beman - The T. B. Blackstone Memorial Library, 1902

Color photograph of this branch of the Chicago Public Library located at 4904 S. Lake Park Avenue, Chicago. This building owes a debt to Beman's Merchant Tailor Building at the World's Columbian Exposition. Today the Library has retained a wealth of original details and is an active neighborhood branch library. Little expense was spared in its creation. Remaining are its beautiful bronze doors, elaborate terrazzo flooring, elegant glass dome, painted murals and many small interior details. "Solon S. Beman: Architecture in Illinois" exhibit.

Beman - William W. Kimball Residence, 1890-1892

Color photograph of Kimball house at 1801 S. Prairie Avenue, Chicago. Perhaps, the most famous of Beman's extant residences, the Kimball house epitomizes his "chateau" style that was much imitated after this house. The picturesque house with its many turrets, bays, round balcomies, elaborate chinmeys, iron work and delicate stone carving is one of the few remaining original mansions on Chicago's original "Gold Coast". George Pullman's mansion originally stood directly across the street, to the north. "Solon S. Beman: Architecture in Illinois" exhibit.
